Cocoa Fermentation Box

Problem addressed

The traditional heap and sack fermentation methods that are being used by farmers always result in uneven fermentation, poor flavor development and low-grade cocoa beans. The fermentation box was developed to improve cocoa quality and consistency, enable farmers to access premium export markets, reduce post-harvest losses, and standardize cocoa processing practices in Uganda.

About this technology

• Improves fermentation uniformity
• Enhances cocoa aroma and flavor precursors
• Reduces contamination risks
• Suitable for farmer groups and cooperatives
• Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper maintenance
• Reduces rejection rates by buyers
• Cost effective – local materials used
